평양 아카데미

10월 3일 아카데미 개학 시 90명의 새 지원자가 각각 시험을 치러야 했다. 모두가 입학할 수는 없었다. 당시 총 등록 인원은 130명으로, 아카데미 건물이 매우 비좁았다. 하급반은 특히 규모가 컸다. 한번은 위층 교실에 들어가니 전체 공간이 빈틈없이 학생들로 가득 차 있었고, 창문과 지붕 위의 공간까지 넘치는 학생들로 차 있었다.

지난해의 가장 주목할 만한 특징 중 하나는 감리교 선교부와의 학교 사업에서의 잠정적 연합이었다. 공식적인 협력 규칙을 기다리지 않고, 각 선교부가 가진 것을 내놓는 것으로 간단히 시작하여 실질적 협력이 이루어졌다. 장로교 선교부는 건물, 소액의 배정금, 그리고 운영 중인 학교를 가지고 있었다. 감리교 선교부는 아직 건물이나 배정금 또는 조직된 학교를 가지고 있지 않았으나, 선교사 베커 씨, 한국인 사범 조교, 그리고 예비 학생들이 있었다. 감리교인들은 지역 교인들이 자체 교파 학교를 설립하고자 하는 열망에 다소 방해를 받았는데, 한국인들이 그 비용을 부담하겠다고 제안하였다. 그들은 연합 사업에 참여하면 장로교 체제에 흡수될 것을 우려하였다. 선교사들은 더 넓은 시각을 취할 수 있었으며, 교육 사업에서의 협력이 효율성과 경제성에 필수적이고, 이곳에 필요한 수준의 학교를 설립하는 데 필요하다고 믿어 연합 사업을 시작하기로 결정하였다. 미래에 대한 많은 믿음이 필요했다.

6월 2일 졸업식은 성공적이었다. 3학년 4명이 졸업했다. 모두가 우수했으며, 앞으로의 활동을 기대할 수 있을 것 같다.

우리에게 적어도 잠정적 합의는 매우 만족스러운 것으로 입증되었다. 베커 씨는 훌륭한 정신과 좋은 교수 능력을 가진 분으로 학생들에게 매우 호감을 주었다. 교파적 이기심이나 개인적 이기심에서 자유로워, 공동의 대의를 위해 열심히 일할 의지가 있었다. 합의에 따라 그는 수학과를 맡아 성공적으로 운영하였다.

수공업 부서는 계속해서 운영되고 있다. 이는 학생들에게 실용적인 기술을 제공하고, 경제적 자립을 돕는다.

한국 추수감사절 헌금은 매우 고무적이었다. 평양 중앙 교회에서 132엔을 모금했으며, 87개 교회로부터 총 418.60엔이 모금되었다. 이는 한국 교회의 헌신적 정신을 보여주는 증거이다.

학교는 일본 예속 문제에 대한 전국적 흥분을 함께했다. 학생 중 일부가 학교를 떠났고, 12명이 서울의 시위에 참가했다. 104명은 학년이 끝날 때까지 남아있었다.

다음 해를 위한 숙박 시설은 현저히 부족했다. 현재의 건물로는 매우 비좁으며, 증축이 절실히 필요했다.

Pyeng Yang Academy. BY DR. W. M. BAIRD.

At the opening of the Academy on October third ninety new applicants had each to be examined. Not all of these could be received. The total enrollment then was one hundred and thirty, which greatly crowded the Academy building. The lower classes especially were large. On one occasion I entered one of the upstairs rooms and found the whole space densely packed with pupils and the space about the windows on the roof outside occupied with the overflow.

One of the most notable features of the year has been the provisional union with the Methodist Mission in school work. Without waiting for official rules of cooperation, it was decided that each Mission should put in what it had and work along practical lines. The Presbyterian Mission had the building, a small appropriation, and a school already in operation. The Methodist Mission had not a building, an appropriation, or an organized school, but it had Mr. Becker, a Korean assistant teacher, and prospective pupils. The Methodists had been somewhat hindered by the desire of the local brethren to start a school of their own, the Korean offering to bear the expense. They were afraid of being absorbed into the Presbyterian system if they joined in the union. The missionaries could take the broader view, and believing that cooperation in educational work is essential to efficiency and economy, and necessary to the establishment of the kind of school this place needs, they decided to enter upon the union. Much faith was needed in the future.

The commencement on June second was a success. Four members of the third class were graduated. All are of good quality, and we look forward to their future usefulness.

To us at least the provisional arrangement has proved very satisfactory. Mr. Becker is a man of fine spirit, a good teacher, and is popular with the pupils. He is free from denominational and personal selfishness, and has the will to work hard for the common cause. Under the arrangement he has charge of the mathematical department, and has done his work well.

The manual labor department continues to be operated. It provides pupils with practical training and helps toward their economic independence.

The Korean Thanksgiving offering has been very encouraging. One hundred and thirty-two yen were contributed by the Pyeng Yang central church, and four hundred and eighteen point six yen came from eighty-seven churches. This shows the devoted spirit of the Korean church.

The school shared the national excitement about Japan dependency. Some pupils left the school. Twelve went to Seoul to take part in the demonstrations. One hundred and four remained until the close of the year.

The accommodations for next year are greatly inadequate. The present building is very much crowded, and an addition is very much needed.

대구 도시 여성들 사이에서

지난 몇 년 동안 도시의 여성들 사이에서 눈에 띄는 영적 성장이 있었다. 5-6명의 여성이 성경 공부반을 이끌 수 있는 능력을 갖추었다. 20-30명의 여성이 주간 신학교를 정기적으로 참석하고 있다.

현재 31명의 세례를 받은 여성과 79명의 예비 신자가 있다. 약 200명의 여성이 우리의 여성 집회에 정기적으로 참석한다.

여름 손님용 방이 열려있었고, 이곳은 많은 방문객의 거처가 되어주었다. 그러나 널의 박사님의 질병이 일부 사업을 제한했다.

성경 여성과 방문객의 사역도 계속되고 있다. 월 75-100회의 가정 방문이 이루어지고 있으며, 성경 여성의 경우 이 숫자의 10배 정도의 방문을 시도하고 있다.

During the past few years there has been marked spiritual growth among the city women. Five or six are capable of teaching Bible classes. From twenty to thirty regularly attend weekly instruction.

There are now thirty-one baptized women and seventy-nine catechumens. About two hundred women regularly attend our women's meetings.

A summer guest room has been kept open, and has been the means of many pleasant visits. Dr. Null's illness has however limited some of the work.

The work of the Bible woman and the caller continues. Seventy-five to one hundred visits are made monthly, and the Bible woman makes about ten times that number of calls.

순회 전도

지난 한 해 동안 상당한 부분을 여행에 사용했다. 멀리 북쪽 지역의 사역은 베른하이젤과 블레어 선교사가 맡았다. 월 35번의 설교와 개인적으로 26번의 전도가 이루어졌다.

여성의 사역도 영변 지구에서 성경 여성들에 의해 수행되었다. 의주와 농촌에서 각각 5개와 3개의 새로운 신자 그룹이 생겨났다. 고성, 곽산, 동주에서 각각 1개의 그룹이 생겨났다.

농촌 관청의 관리들 중 많은 수가 신앙으로 개종했다. 신천 교계의 경우, 최대 규모인 8개 부서에서 1140명의 남성이 모여 있었다.

교회의 수는 60개에서 78개로 증가했다. 신자의 수는 6507명에서 11943명으로 거의 두 배로 증가했다.

A large part of the year has been spent travelling. The work far north has been done by Bernheisel and Blair. Thirty-five services a month, and twenty-six preaching by me personally.

Woman's work has been done on Yeng Byen district by Bible women. Five new groups in Euiju and three in Nongchun. One each in Kouseng, Kwaksan, and Tungju.

Many of the magistracy officials of Nongchun have become believers.

The Syen Chyun class consists of 1140 men in 8 divisions, the largest in Korea.

The work has increased from 60 to 78 churches, with adherents from 6507 to 11,943.

영변 지구 여성 사역

Native Bible women are carrying the work. Visits to the principal groups have been made during October and November. The Yeng Byen Sabbath School has been organized into divisions.

One woman, known as "Mary," was baptized and moved to Yeng Byen.

The First Bible Institute was held early in April, including ladies from Pyeng Yang. The class was remarkable in numbers, attendance, and interest.

The work was entirely self-supporting, not a cent being given by the Board.

주목할 만한 집회

목포의 부흥 집회는 매우 특별했다. 이곳은 독특한 항구로서, 다른 지역에 비해 가장 큰 교회를 가지고 있다. 남호남 지역에서의 8년간의 사역으로 60개 이상의 집회 장소와 평균 300명 이상의 신자가 있다. 세례를 받은 회원은 80명이고, 7개 군에서 42명의 지도자들이 모였다.

감리교 선교사인 제이. 엘. 거디니 목사가 하루에 두 번씩 설교했다. 성령으로 충만한 분위기 속에서 많은 사람들이 눈물로 자신의 죄를 고백했다.

집회 시작 전에 150명이 기도를 위해 모여 준비했다. 집회는 4일간 계속되었다.

A Notable Meeting. BY REV. J. F. PRESTON.

The revival meeting at Mokpo was unique. This is a port with proportionately the largest church. In eight years of work in South Chulla province there are over sixty meeting places with an average congregation of over three hundred. There are eighty baptized members, and forty-two leaders from seven counties.

Rev. J. L. Gerdine of the Southern Methodist Mission preached twice daily. In a Spirit-filled atmosphere, confessions poured out and many wept over their sins.

One hundred and fifty gathered for prayer before the meeting began. The meeting lasted four days.

1905년 10월 연례 회의에서 돌아왔다. 존슨의 손님용 방의 벽지를 다시 붙였다. 널의 집에서 6주 동안 하숙했다. 겨울의 추위 속에서 여러 집 사이를 이동하며 머물렀다. 손님용 집의 수리가 이루어졌다.

시골 지역으로의 여행은 애덤스 씨와 함께 경주와 브루엔 지역으로 다녀갔다. 겨울에는 그리스도의 순회에 대한 강의를 진행했다.

조암 교회는 대구에서 2시간 떨어져 있다.

Beginnings of Missionary Work. BY REV. E. F. McFARLAND.

Returned from the Annual Meeting, October, 1905. Papered the guest room of Johnson's house. Boarded six weeks with the Nulls. During the winter, moving between houses in the cold. Repairs were made on the guest house.

Country trips with Mr. Adams were made to Kyeng Ju and Bruen. In the winter, taught a class on Christ's travels.

The Cho Am church is two hours from Taiku.

다툼이 은혜의 수단이 되다

곡산의 사역은 좋은 진전을 보이고 있다. 새로운 도움과 여성 사역자가 추가되었다.

칠골 교회에서는 지도자와 보조자 사이에 싸움이 일어났다. 지도자의 사직이 받아들여졌다. 한 노인이 화를 냈다. 마가복음 14장 42절은 이 상황에 관련된 중요한 말씀이었다.

마지막 방문에서 지도자는 겸손한 마음으로 자신의 잘못을 인정했고, 눈물로 자신의 죄를 회개했다.

A Quarrel The Means of Grace. BY REV. G. LEE.

The work at Koksan shows excellent progress. A new helper and a woman worker have been added.

At the Chil Kol church there was a quarrel between the helper and the leader. The leader's resignation was accepted. An old man was angry. Mark 14:42 was the word of God for the situation.

On our last visit the leader made a humble confession of his wrong, and wept over his sin.

한 늙은 여인이 우상 숭배의 물건들을 태워버릴 수 있기를 간청했다. 친구들이 그녀에게 권했다. 여성이 뜨거운 음식 그릇으로 물건을 태웠다. 그녀의 아들(이교도)은 하나님의 분노가 믿지 않는 것에 대한 것이라고 말했다.

평양의 노블 목사는 가정을 방문하는 사역을 활발히 했다. 한 주간에만 400명의 사람들이 제단에 나왔다. 이는 이 도시의 기독교 가정이 40% 정도임을 시사한다.

Two Incidents. BY MISS H. P. ROBBINS.

An old lady begged to burn fetishes. Friends urged her. She burned them with a hot dish. The son (heathen) said God's wrath was for not believing.

Rev. W. A. Noble of Pyeng Yang has been doing house-to-house visitations. Four hundred people at the altars in one week. This suggests that about forty per cent of the city houses are Christian.

삼화 분기별 회의는 평양에서 서쪽으로 120리 떨어진 곳에서 열렸다. 삼화 군에는 6개의 교회가 있다. 군청이 있는 지역에는 큰 신도층이 있다. 3개의 새로운 교회가 지어졌다. 2명의 도우미 한신도와 안석훈이 사역하고 있다.

현재 51명의 정회원, 268명의 준회원, 169명의 구도자가 있으며, 총 488명이다.

The Sam Wha Quarterly Conference was held one hundred and twenty li west of Pyeng Yang. There are six churches in Sam Wha county. In the county seat there is a large congregation. Three new churches have been built. Two helpers, Han Sin-do and An Suk-hun, are doing the work.

There are now fifty-one full members, two hundred and sixty-eight probationers, one hundred and sixty-nine seekers, making a total of four hundred and eighty-eight.

한국의 공공 도서관

새로운 건물의 도서관이 1월 1일에 개관했다. 개관식 날에 5000냥의 헌금이 모금되었다. 여러 학습 반이 운영되고 있다.

후측에는 목욕실이 있으며, 4개의 큰 욕조와 2개의 샤워기가 있다. 남성들은 오후 2시부터 9시까지 사용할 수 있고, 여성들은 오전 9시부터 정오까지 사용할 수 있다. 중장로가 이를 관리한다.

처음 6개월 동안 400엔이 지출되었다.

A library was opened in a new building on January 1st. An offering of five thousand nyang was received on the opening day. Study classes are carried on.

There is a bath-room in the rear with 4 large tubs and 2 sprays. Men use it from 2 to 9 P.M., women from 9 A.M. to 12. Elder Chung is in charge.

In the first six months four hundred yen was expended.

Five revived centres: Kamurachi, Notulli, Ryung Nan Do, and Pai Chun magistracy revival. Putenai Sabbath workers have been restored.

Four girls and one boy recited 330 verses. At Pai Chun there is a normal class with 10 teachers. A night school is in operation.

섬 위에 9개의 교회가 있다. 강화 관청에는 12개의 섬이 딸려있다. 이 중 6개 섬에서만 사역이 이루어지고 있다. 송개 교회는 너무 작아서 안식일에 2000명 이상이 모인다.

권신일은 지역의 설교자이다. 473엔이 모금되었는데, 지난해보다 378엔이 더 많다. 데밍과 함께 우상숭배 물품을 제거했다.

There are nine churches on islands. Twelve islands are attached to Kang-wha magistracy. Work is done on six of the twelve. The Songkai church is too small; over two thousand gather on Sabbath.

Kwon-Sin-il is a local preacher. Four hundred and seventy-three yen were raised, a gain of three hundred and seventy-eight over last year. Fetishes have been destroyed with Deming.

Songga on the Island of Kum has a girls' school of fifteen pupils. Tol-mo-ro farming village has a school. On the Island of Kang Wha at Hongae there is a volunteer teacher.

Elizabeth at Nam Yang, Priscilla at Hai-ju, Ada Kim at Chemulpo (teacher), Eunice and Helena in Whang-hai province are at work.

Cecilia has received artificial limbs from Mrs. Jones.

모르핀 중독자가 55명이다. 모르핀은 일본에서 자유롭게 판매되고 있다. 일부 경우에는 하루에 120그레인의 모르핀과 15그레인의 코카인을 사용한다.

학생 보조원들(10명의 기독교인)이 있다. 가장 오래된 학생은 4학년이다.

A Doctor's Life in Syen Chyen. BY DR. A. M. SHARROCKS.

New buildings have been erected. There were 1400 patients in one month. It is projected that there will be 15,000 per year. The expense to the Board has not been increased.

The dispensary receipts are over 10 yen per day. There are men's and women's wards. From November to June there were 336 in-patients.

There are 55 morphine habitues. Morphine is sold freely in Japan. In some cases 120 grains of morphine and 15 of cocaine daily are used.

There are student assistants, of whom 10 are Christians. The oldest student is in the fourth year.
