Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord the Supplier of all our needs, a knowledge of the plain, simple paths of right and love. Give us Thine own Companionship; Thine own righteousness, indeed, O Lord, Thine Own Self. With the strength and vigor of Thine own grace, grant, that we may discern the things that are excellent. Clear from the eyes of our souls the mist and haze of unbelief, that in all things we may see Christ only. Touch the inner springs of our lives that we may have a constraining love for the unlovely; a passionate desire to help the weak; a spirit of sacrifice "spending and being spent." May we exhalt in our lives the life of Christ; in our ministry the power and unction of the Holy Spirit, and in our judgement of all men that Charity which is the gift of Thine own Land. For Christ sake, Amen.

ANNUAL REPORT OF SONGDO MEDICAL WORK

When after an absence of a little over eight years from Korea I once more set foot in Songdo, this time as a medical missionary to a people that I had learned to love, it was with a glad heart and thankfulness for the privilege of being permitted to cast my lot in amongst them, and with the earnest prayer that God would make me worthy of the high calling to which I felt He had called me, that through me His comfort might be brought into the hearts of many of the suffering and sorrowing ones of this nation. The warm reception given me by the missionaries, many of whom I had known as a boy, and the familiar look of things in general, made me feel more as if I was coming home than starting in as a missionary in a foreign land and I soon settled down to the regular routine of the work.

Seeing that it was felt that the study of the language was of paramount importance it was decided that the medical work should be limited as much as possible so as not to encroach upon study hours, therefore until April last the mornings were devoted to getting the language and part of the time three afternoons a week were also given to that occupation. The other afternoons being spent in the dispensary gave a good opportunity for putting into practice the words and constructions that had been learned. After the middle of April, however, the overseeing of the building operations on the new hospital site, together with a great deal of serious illness among the missionaries of our station, took up so much time that the time for language study has been very much interrupted.

The medical supply of the station was found to consist of a few old drugs shut up in a dark and musty 8×8 room in our historic "Old Ginseng Shed." It was not long however, before opportunity was found for moving into more spacious and airy quarters over on the new hospital grounds. There the dispensary was opened three afternoons in the week and the attendance steadily increased from eight or ten to twenty or thirty in an afternoon, and some afternoons there have been as many as forty or more present for treatment, some of them walking great distances to see the foreign doctor. An attempt was made to answer outcalls into the city but it was soon found that if this was continued there would be no time for any other work whatever, so it was discontinued exception being made for the Koreans on our Ladies' compound and our own.

Immediately on arrival in conjunction with Dr. J. W. Reed plans were discussed for the election of our new Ivey Hospital and after deciding what was wanted and receiving the approval of the building committee, Dr. J. W. Reed drew up the plans and the work was started, the foundations being partly laid before the setting in of cold weather. In April the work was started again and owing to the fact that so much time had to be given to the overseeing of the work it was decided that the dispensary should be opened only on two afternoons of the week until its completion. The building operations have gone on very satisfactorily until now the stone work is practically completed, the roof is on the larger part of the hospital, the lathing is nearly all finished, and the flooring is being put down and preparations are being made to begin the plastering. It is feared, however, that there will not be time to complete the plastering before the advent of the cold weather which will prevent getting into full working order till the following spring or early summer.

As to statistics, the totals for the year are as follows:— No. of treatments in dispensary, ... ... ... 2,434. No. of calls on Koreans and missionaries, ... ... ... 400+. Total receipts from all sources, ... ... ... yen 1697.78. Total expenses, ... ... ... yen 1437.47. Total funds in hand, ... ... ... yen 260.31. No. of inpatients (not exactly recorded), ... ... ... 50+. No. of major operations, ... ... ... 10.

It gives me pleasure to state here that the ability to accomplish the amount of medical work above noted has largely been due to the able and faithful assistance of my Korean helper Pai-Sun-Meung and his wife, whose cheerfulness and willingness through the most trying duties has often been an inspiration to me.

The evangelical phase of a medical missionary's work has not been forgotten, for an effort has been made to have a native preacher and a Bible woman on hand on dispensary days whose duty it has been to preach to those waiting for treatment and to sell gospels and distribute tracts. In this way we have hoped to reach those who would otherwise not hear the Gospel Message. During the last four months we have had a regularly appointed dispensary preacher who preaches to the waiting patients and their friends, sells gospels, distributes tracts, and then between times he preaches to the inpatients and goes out into the city following up those who have received treatment at the dispensary. In this way since the first of Jan. 1908 there have been sold yen 9.30's worth of Gospels, etc., and the preacher reports that in the last four months fifteen have become believers and thirty more seemed interested, saying that they would believe though not taking a definite stand.

The first year on the field is now finished. Through all its trials God has been my strength, and looking back over the many manifestations of His grace and love during the year that has gone, my heart is full of gratitude and praise, and it is with confidence in His continued mercies that I look forward to the year that is to come as to the best year in all my life.

REPORT OF WONSAN CIRCUIT: M.E. CHURCH: SOUTH

Rev. R. A. Hardie

In June, 1907, we reported the Conference Year then closing, as the most successful in the history of the Wonsan Circuit. During the fourteen months since, the work has made rapid progress, and a comparison of our statistical report with that of last year shows an increase in members of 152%, in probationers of 153% and in contributions of 120%.

In February of this year the "division of territory" effected between our mission and the missions of the Northern and Canadian Presbyterian Churches, was completed, by the transfer to our church of all the work of the Canadian Presbyterians in the province of Kang Won. With the exception of a very narrow strip of territory about 30 miles long and a small circular area 1½ miles in radius, the Wonsan circuit now includes all the territory south of Wonsan, between the East Coast and the eastern border of the Yi Chun, Che-kyung-in, and Choon-chun circuits. It comprises six whole counties and parts of three others and is over 190 miles long and from 30 to 50 miles wide, and has a population of 150,000.

For convenience of description it may be divided into four sections each of which should, I believe, be made a circuit.

THE YOUNG-DONG SECTION comprises five of the nine coast counties of Kang-won Province. In this section we have 21 organized societies and several unorganized groups of believers with an enrollment of 276 members and 97 probationers. Of this number 16 members and 97 probationers, representing four societies and two groups, were transferred to us by the Canadian Presbyterians. In each of these counties there are two native workers, most of whom are doing good evangelistic work. During the year gracious revivals have been experienced in the three counties to the north. The progress in the central county, Ko-sung, has been remarkable and the churches of this county are undertaking the support of a native worker. Of the four dayschools in this section two are in this county.

THE WHOAY-YANG SECTION comprises one of the largest counties in Korea. We formerly did pioneer work in this county, but for the last five years it has been worked solely by the Presbyterians, and in the transfer we received from them 6 organized societies and 5 groups, with a total enrollment of 37 members and 155 probationers. We have now working in this county one of our best native helpers, two colporteurs supported by the British and Foreign Bible Society and two Bible Women. During the summer six new societies have been organized and the 12 churches in this county now have 79 members and 114 probationers. There is one dayschool in Pook-chang and another about to be organized in Sam-pat-kol.

THE AN-PYUN SECTION comprises the greater part of the large county of An-pyun and a part of Yi Chun County, known as Tuay-me-tan. Much of this section lies beyond the high mountain range to the west of Wonsan and is exceedingly mountainous. Colportage work has been carried on there for 15 years, but until this year we have had but one organized society to the west of the mountain range. In the whole section we have now 15 societies and a number of small groups with an enrollment of 152 members and 129 probationers. During the year the spirit of revival has been more marked in this section than in any other part of the circuit.

THE WONSAN SECTION comprises the Port of Wonsan and adjacent territory in the counties of An-pyun and Tuk-won. The territory in the immediate vicinity of Wonsan seems much less productive of results than that more distant, and we have within a ten mile radius of the Port only four weak societies. The church in Wonsan is growing steadily and 47 new members have been added during the year. Several of the strongest members have been appointed to work on the circuit and have with their families removed to their several appointments. A site for a second church in the Port has been bought, and work will be organized there this autumn. The total enrollment for the Wonsan section is 168 members and 98 probationers. A most encouraging feature of our work this year has been the interest taken by the women in following the Course of Study adopted at our last annual meeting. A considerable number have completed the first and second year's course and have received their certificates. Perhaps one of the best results of this has been the effect it has had in encouraging the women in the country districts to follow their example. Would it not be well to prepare a course of study for the men and have suitable certificates printed for presentation to all who complete the same?

Another phase of work which has created a great deal of interest, which I believe will eventually prove a great blessing to the Wonsan Church and to the community at large, is the opening of an Opium Refuge. Victims of the "morphine habit" have increased at a most alarming rate during the past two years, and if steps are not taken to check the use of opium it will soon be proportionately as widespread as it is in China. The Wonsan Church has formed an anti-opium league which is undertaking an educational campaign as well as helping in everything pertaining to the work of "the Refuge." Public meetings are held twice a month and every Thursday afternoon as many of the members as possible visit the opium "dens," the homes of victims, and preach in the open streets. The Japanese Resident has taken an interest in the work and issued instructions to the police on the subject. The traffic is not now carried on in the Japanese drug-shops in the public way it was eight months ago, and many of the Chinese and native shops have been forced off the main streets altogether. We have treated about 40 cases during the year, but many of these have returned to the use of the drug after a few weeks, and we can hope for little in the way of permanent results unless the patients are regenerated as well as reformed. Nearly all who have come to us however still continue to attend church and we are not at all discouraged. Prayer in behalf of this work, is earnestly requested.

THE BIBLICAL INSTITUTE At the beginning of the year we arranged to hold a theological class in Seoul for one month, to be attended by the more advanced helpers of the Methodist Episcopal and our own churches, and then to hold training classes on all the circuits of the two missions. On account of the disturbed condition of the country last autumn, and later the pressure of other work assigned to the instructors, the Seoul class was the only one held. Thirty-three men attended it, four of them from our church. They were divided into senior and junior classes with an enrollment of 18 and 15 respectively. Lectures on Christian Evidences, introductory to a course on Systematic Theology were given each class by Dr. Jones. The two classes together were given instruction on Discipline by Dr. Noble, and on Church History by Rev. Cram. My work consisted of a study of the Epistle to the Galatians with the senior class, and of First Corinthians with the junior class. The grade made by the men during the class and on the written examination at the close, showed fairly satisfactory results, only four in each class failing to make a pass. The work the Biblical Institute is designed to do is exceedingly urgent, and we trust that the men appointed to it may if possible be relieved from all other responsibility.

I have completed a little less than half the work assigned me on the translation of the Discipline but hope to have all finished in a few weeks.

Respectfully submitted, R. A. HARDIE.

Hon. T. H. Yun, President

(ATTEMPTS WISE AND OTHERWISE)

산업 공작소 (The Industrial Shop).

농장 (The Farm).

사범 클래스 (The Normal Class).

On the 12th September, 1907, the Anglo-Korean School entered on the second year of its existence. The roll-book of the Fall term opens with 116 names and closes, on the 28th Jan. 1908, with 135. The school having outgrown the seating capacity of the Ginseng shed, we had to construct a temporary building, in the shape of a cross, thatched with straw. It was a breezy affair, cool enough for summer, but rather too cool as the autumn advanced. We were glad indeed when in the latter part of November Rev. Cram moved into his new home, giving us the use of the rooms in the western half of the "India rubber House." The completion of the new residence of Rev. Wasson about two weeks later, placed at our disposal one more room, thus enabling us to accommodate a large portion of the school in one building. The Ginseng shed and another detached house were used for the primary classes.

The Spring term began on the 7th Feb. with 120 boys. Two hundred and twenty-five names were enrolled during the term. Of these, 120 belonged to the primary classes, while 105 studied in advanced grades. Ten teachers including Rev. Wasson and myself and three student tutors gave the whole or part of their time to the work. Thirty-five boys were boarders from the country, 162 were professing Christians.

In the matter of tuition, of text books and teachers we experienced pretty much the same difficulties as had been mentioned in my last report.

We were grateful to receive, in the month of May, the "Memorial Library" of the late Mr. Thomas Dodd, from Miss Mary Dodd of Covington, Ky. It was during this term also that we received yen 1200.00 from Bishop Candler for our student Labor Funds. But we have been careful not to use it yet, lest a cent of it misspent may be labor lost and fund wasted.

ATTEMPTS WISE AND OTHERWISE. The public monuments of every nation always depict its victories and triumphs only, relegating to the comparatively obscure pages of history the records of its failures and defeats. I would fain imitate this by reporting only our successes, if we had any, and suppressing our mistakes, which have been many. That would, however, make my report entirely too short, so I shall mention some of the attempts, wise or unwise, which we made during the year.

  1. The Industrial Shop. About two months after the installation of Mr. Thompson as the president of the "Batchelors' Den," a workshop was improvised at one end of the ever accommodating Ginseng shed. The shop was equipped with two chests of tools sent from America, and a furnace which the boys of the advanced English class built under the direction of Mr. Thompson. As the details of the shop may be better reported by Mr. Thompson, I shall only repeat what everybody feels and says of it, that the shop was a step in the right direction. It is true we have not gone very far; but it is no mere dream on our part to hope that our beloved Bishop, who is now honoring us with his presence, may preside over the conference of 1909 in a room furnished with chairs and tables all "homemade" in Mr. Thompson's shop.

  2. Early last Autumn we secured the use of a guild building, located in the mercantile centre of the city, to start a night school for the benefit of the clerks and errand boys of the shops, who are, as a class, too busy to attend schools or churches. Owing, however, to our inability to secure a teacher qualified to give lessons on business methods, the attempt proved a partial failure. The night school, however, continued its existence in the Ginseng shed all through the year with the regular attendance of over 20 students.

  3. The Farm. This year we parcelled out the garden to older boys only hoping that they would take better care of the crops than little ones. In the month of April we hired a Chinese gardener at yen 15.00 per month to teach the boys. But almost all the boys who took the "Farms" went off to Seoul to join the surveying classes—which became a rage in the capital,—thinking wrongly or rightly that they could get more money out of a "tsubo" of land by measuring it than by manuring it. Besides, the Chinaman devoting his time and—fertilizers too—to the patches under his own cultivation, had neither time nor inclination to teach others. From these causes, the farm proved a failure.

  4. The Normal Class. When the school closed on the tenth of June, a normal class was started for the benefit of those who are teaching in the country schools. Thirty-three men representing all the stations of the Mission came to the class. The work was necessary imperfect; but it was very valuable, not only in giving the men such enlightenment as they could not get in their villages, but also in showing us the possibility of meeting in some measure the great need that has been felt with increasing force every day throughout infant church—namely, the supply of teachers.

CONCLUSION. The school, starting with 14 boys, two years ago, has grown to be the leading institution of its kind in Songdo, with the enrollment of 225 pupils. While this growth, partly due to the abolition of the old fashioned private schools in the city last May, is therefore more or less unreliable, it is a positive fact that the people look on our school as the only place to get what they need—that is—a practical, and wholesome education. That we must do all that we can to meet these expectations, goes without saying. To do this we must have a well equipped industrial department; a good business course emphasizing the study of Japanese; and a thorough course in English. All admit the necessity of the former two; but some may look upon the last,—the study of English as a luxury, at best. But I maintain that it is more than a luxury: it is a necessity for Korea. English is par excellence, the diplomatic, nay better still, the commercial, nay best of all, the missionary language of the Far East. It is not too much to say, that the next best thing to filling Korea with Christianity, is filling the land with the English literature. The universal desire on the part of the young Korea to learn English—in spite of the overwhelming predominance of the Japanese influence—is one of the few hopeful signs in this land of sorrow and shame. This demand we ought to satisfy because it is good. Some of you may have noticed a sign board in Seoul over a Korean drug store with these words in English: "Every sickness must be examined or cured." You say that is not good English!! Nor do I say it is. All I mean to say is that English has become so popular that a man will display his knowledge of it anywhere and anyhow. If he can't get good English, he will get bad English. The want of teachers compelled us to reduce the hours for English to one-third of what they were last year. The protest from the boys and the parents is loud and sincere, they say: "We come here in preference to other schools in order to study English. When and how are we to get anything of it an hour and half a week?" That is unanswearably true. We must put the English course on a stronger basis or we will lose our prestige, which we can't afford to do at this juncture of educational commotion throughout the country. But we can't do so without teachers. The urgency of the case makes me bold to pray that the Bishop will be good enough to appoint some one before he leaves Songdo to help us to give more time to English—and that at once!!

Respectfully submitted T. H. YUN.

It was the Editor's privilege to obtain a short respite from work a few weeks ago, and hie himself away to China for a glimpse at only a small portion of that largest nation under God's sun and to learn some lessons in missionary operations from our more experienced brethren. Any one who has been a Missionary in Korea, upon visiting another mission field, undoubtedly sees many things he could criticise. The work of Evangelizing Korea, while of course in only the initial stages and is therefore by no means an accomplished fact, has been so fruitful of large results and has made such rapid progress that one wonders why the same has not been true in other fields. However it is much easier to criticise that it is to bring things to pass. The missionaries in China have problems to solve peculiar to their field which have never presented themselves to the missionaries in Korea.

The Educational work being done by the missionaries in China is of a high order. The thoroughly equipped men and women are giving to China's young manhood and womanhood opportunities for Academic research, and University training, in connection with Christian instruction, surpassed by none. The product of the Christian School in China is a finished one. The Educational Methods and in fact all branches of missionary work are thoroughly organized after the best and latest systems. If we should be allowed to venture a suggestion as to what the missionaries in Korea could learn from the work of Missions in China it would be "Organize better and place the Emphasis of the Work of the Missionary on the training and development of the leaders of Church and School." And we thought as we saw the Work of Education, in some parts of that great country, much better equipped with men, money, and buildings than either Medical or Evangelistic work that China's Missionaries might learn from our work in Korea, that in establishing the Kingdom of righteousness the 'foolishness of preaching' should under no circumstances be given second place in the Divine propaganda, but that every form of Missionary work should be founded upon this one thing.

Missionary work in China has been moving forward at a slow pace in many places. The customs of this proud nation and her old civilization have enabled her to fight against the onward march of the gospel. But the days of the old conservatism are numbered. The "Old Dragon" of the East is beginning to rise from the sleep of the Centuries, and some of the powers, superstitiously attributed to this mythical beast, which has been China's representative emblem, will become real and potent forces in the life of Young China. They will be forces working out a form and character of life that shall astonish the world. China is no longer the doing dear of the Far Eastern nations. This China is dead. And from the grave of this old China there is being resurrected a China, alert, active, intelligent, wary, and above all filled with a desire to do something for her own betterment. This makes the work of Christian Missions very attractive and there is undoubtedly opened an effectual door to the preacher of Christ. The Church of Christ should see her opportunity and do her best for China. Men filled with the Spirit, and possessed with a love for the lost, are the crying need of China to-day.

The plans for the speedy Evangelization of Korea are being assiduously carried out by the Boards having Missions in Korea. In a comparatively short time the Mission of the Northern Presbyterian Church will have a line of stations running from Kang Kei on the Northern border to Fusan on the Extreme South-East of the Peninsula. If we have been correctly informed a new station is planned between Fusan and Taiku and another between Taiku and Chun Ju, and still another at Won Ju in the territory received from the Southern Methodists in the division of the country. Then comes Seoul, Chai-ryung, Pyengyang, Sun Chun and Kang Kei, making in all a line of stations through the very centre of the peninsula, placing the missionaries in the most strategic positions possible for a complete evangelization of the territory contiguous to each station. This is Missionary work in earnest. This character of work will count for something worth while in the making of Korea a Christian nation. Physicians, teachers, preachers, lady missionaries and others have come to Korea this year to swell the already large force of this prosperous mission. We like the thorough going plans and the integrity of purpose with which the whole mission carries out these arrangements. It all savors of victory. Ere long at this pace Korea will be numbered among the Christian nations.

REPORT OF THE WORK OF THE WOMAN'S BOARD OF MISSIONS OF THE M.E. CHURCH, SOUTH

Mrs. J. P. Campbell, Seoul

(BIBLE WOMAN'S WORK, SEOUL STATION)

This report has been prepared for those who desire a more extended view of the vast work which the Woman's Board of Missions has in Korea. During the past ten years the school work of our Board has seen a marvelous development. When we began we had only a small school in one of the original locations of our missionary schools with but a few girl pupils. To-day we have a large school in Seoul with about 200 girl pupils, and three boarding schools on other stations with about 300 girl pupils together.

In the matter of administrative management and the strategic placement of our pupils we have made some changes, and now each station is supervising largely her own school work. The three boarding schools which we have are very well managed, and our pupils are supplied with excellent equipment and educational facilities. From these three schools the graduates have all come into the Christian faith and most of them have become active in various lines of work. Many of them in particular are engaged as Bible women or teachers.

BIBLE WOMAN'S WORK, SEOUL STATION In the Seoul station we have four full-time Bible women and a number of part-time Bible women,—the exact number is hard to ascertain,—but about eight or more. These women are scattered in various parts of the city and daily endeavor to disseminate the truths of Christianity among their neighbors. One more than trial work that we have is a Women's Organization. This was started under the inspiration of a Union of Protestant Women's Missionaries and industrial schools in neighboring countries, and now has about 50 women members who meet regularly. This organization is one of the most prominent features among women and affords non-Christian women an opportunity to learn of Christian teaching.

BOYS' SCHOOL IN KOREA

The securing of a certain Korean for the rôle of principal of the Anglo-Korean School at Songdo, was one of my most important considerations. He must have been recommended not only for his ability as an educator, but by his Christian character, his genuine piety, and his deep love for the better future of Korea. All these conditions were crowned in our friend Mr. T. H. Yun. His fine education, his wide travels, his understanding of the world, and his highest ambitions for his native country seemed to call him to be a leader of an educational institution of his people.

I am confident that that school will do its very best, and will be a great force for education in Korea. All the parents of Korea will want their sons to attend such a school, under the guidance of such a wise leader. What it will do for the future generation of Korea, I know not.

LEAVES FROM AN ITINERANT'S NOTE BOOK

Nov. 5. This afternoon a woman came to see me, telling me that her husband had died and that she had come over to the Christian faith. She had been attending church, but she had been unable on account of her husband's influence to make a public profession of Christianity. Now she wants to take her stand upon a firm Christian foundation. How many souls have been set free in this way? This is but one case.

Nov. 6. To-day I visited several houses and found many prospective believers. In one house I found a man reading the Bible, and he told me that he was seriously considering the matter of faith. In another house a woman said she wanted to pray, and we prayed together.

Nov. 7. In visiting several villages to-day I could see how rapidly the Christian faith is spreading. In regions where Christians were very rare a few years ago, there are now many believers. It is marvelous how much progress the Lord's work is making in Korea.

Nov. 9. In a village I found that more than twenty people desired to learn about the faith. They showed serious interest in Bible reading and preaching. I plan to visit them again in coming times.

Nov. 10. To-day I met with several helpers of our mission, and I was deeply impressed by their dedication and faithfulness. They have given their lives completely to helping their people, and continue to work even in difficult circumstances. Without such helpers our work would have been impossible.

PERSONAL REPORT FOR 1907-1908

During this reporting period I have continued the general missionary work without particular difficulty. In visiting several villages each week we have devoted ourselves to the dissemination of Christian truth. During the past year we have met with many women and children, and many of them have shown interest in the Christian faith.

Our school work for girls has shown continuous growth. During this school year we have had about one hundred girl pupils enrolled in our school. Most of these girl pupils are following the Christian faith, and their Christian growth is evident.

Medical work continues to be an important part of our ministry. Each week in the dispensary we have seen many patients. Through medical work we have had the opportunity to disseminate the Christian faith to many souls.

Overall, during this period our ministry has been blessed by God. While there have been difficulties, with God's help we continue to move forward. We pray for even greater results in the periods ahead.

W. C. DUNSCOMBE, M.D.

DEAR MR. CRAM, This institution (Kobe Sanitarium) is conducted on a charitable philanthropic basis to provide a place where missionaries who are sick or broken down can recuperate. I would like to put a notice of our institution in one of the papers that is read by the majority of the missionaries in Korea. However I noticed that you have no advertisements at all in your paper, "The Korea Mission Field," so I thought I would write and ask you if you would insert a notice in your paper in regard to our institution. Mrs. Scranton or Dr. Birdman of Mokpo, can give you any information you desire about our place. Sincerely yours, W. C. DUNSCOMBE, M.D.
