그들의 재를 길에 흩뿌렸나이다;
다시 육신으로 당신을 보여주소서;
"당신의 눈을 뜨고 보시라;

GIFTS.
What shall I give to Thee, O Lord?
The kings that came of old
Laid softly on Thy cradle rude
Their myrrh and gems of gold.
Thy martyrs gave their hearts' warm blood,
Their ashes strewed the way;
They spurned their lives as dreams and dust
To speed Thy coming day.
Thou knowest of sweet and precious things
My store is scant and small
Yet wert Thou here in want and woe,
Lord, I would give Thee all.
Show me Thyself in flesh once more;
Thy feast I long to spread,
To bring the water for Thy feet,
The ointment for Thy head.
There came a voice from heavenly heights:
"Unclose thine eyes and see;
Gifts to the least of those I love
Thou givest unto Me."

We started fairly early from Seoul, but it took us until nine o'clock at night to reach Mo Kol, a distance of over one hundred and ten li. The native lantern I had bought in Seoul was exhausted as to candle long before we ceased to need it, so one of the coolies demanded a torch from a house by the road, and pieces of pine wood were cordially given. Three coolies carried two empty chairs, while the fourth chair bearer walked ahead to light the way. Mrs. Yun and I walked, of course.
The Christians were expecting us, and many came with pleasant greetings. We staid for prayer and study the next morning, so had a late start.
At Yang Keun Eup Nay, Helper Ye Chang Gangy, his wife and other Christians were waiting for us with words of welcome. Mr. Clarke had hired the coolies, and they were fine, fat fellows, and he had also sent a courier ahead to announce our coming.
It was after dark when we reached Kok Soo, where many of the Christians were standing, waiting for us, with loving words. Women came to attend the class from Moo Kol, from Yai Jok Um Sheel and from San Kol. One bright woman had her nine year old son with her, and also her twin sons, babies under a year old. They were fascinating to behold, and gazing upon them distracted us from study not a little.
The Church was a delight. It had fresh white paper upon it. My own room was uncommonly hot, as food for the cattle was cooked under it. There was no paper on the floor, the walls were black, and the flies were in swarms. To accomplish eating and drinking was most difficult because of them. One regretted not having brought a mosquito curtain.
The women staid through the class fairly well. We studied here, as at all the classes, the Life of Christ, Mark's Gospel (learning the headings of the chapters) the Apostles' Creed, the Ten Commandments and the shorter catechism. In the latter we went only over the question, "What is the chief end of man?" but one was thankful to have one question and answer learned. Many of the women are work hardened creatures, their muscles and their minds stiffened by years of toil in the fields. One could only marvel that they learned as much as they did. Five or more women came in as new believers. Mrs. Yun is simply filled with joy when an unbeliever comes in sight. Her powers of invective, exhortation and persuasion are most remarkable, and she can answer fluently every excuse a poor sister may offer, such as: I have no sense, I have no house, My eyes are dim, My husband is dead, My mind is dark, I have no children, I cannot read, I have no son. I have no money.
WUN JU. It was here that we had the most delightful class in my experience. We came a long journey on the 21st of October, over many passes, "Moo So Un Kokai", frightful passes, the coolies warned me before we left Kok Soo. But having seen the mountains of North America and the Alps, there was no surprise. The steep paths were full of loose stones, and Mrs. Yun fell once, but fortunately was not injured. We passed soldiers many times, and met others. We did not arrive until after dark, although we started at dawn. Two of the helpers were here, and everyone was expecting us.
Women came to study from Chal-kam-ee, 10 li away, from Mun-mak, 40 , , and from Wheng Sung Eup, 40 li away. One sister learned fifteen questions and answers in the Shorter Catechism while we were there, and we learned the headings of the first two Chapters of Mark's Gospel, and learned also to explain them. In all the classes we had much singing out of the new union hymn book.
The women slept in the Church, and we studied there. In all classes we had morning, afternoon and evening sessions. We all went from house to house preaching through the city. The visiting sisters went, particularly, those of Wun Ju having often household duties to attend to. After a prayer meeting to ask God's blessing, we went about by two's. However, four or five usually went with me, although I tried to carry out the two by two rule. We were everywhere most hospitably received, we asked all to come to the Church in the evening. Often I was invited to a feast, and after partaking my hostess would say she would come, and did so. Only fancy such hospitality shown to a foreigner who walks uninvited into one's compound? Everywhere I was showered with flattering words as to my appearance. My Korean garments, with their fine needlework were greatly admired. At one house we were sitting telling the Gospel to the women, when a crowd of school boys from a school near rushed in for a sight see, I remained hidden till I began to fear a disturbance so decided to walk into the court to relieve the situation. After a breathless moment they said in one voice "Cho-sun poksak," Korean clothing, in disappointed tones, and hurried away. It was at Wun Ju that I was able to surrender the last citadel of foreign dress, the hair pin, and to put up my hair with only a string and a metal bar.
The women who were not with me preaching from house to house, but went by two's, invited the sisters to an evening meeting in the Church, and urged that the foreign lady would be on view. But also for their hopes! For they would protest "She wears our clothes and speaks our language." They only living giraffe in the managerie was stuffed with straw.
The Church was crowded with women every evening. After a song service, with reading of Scripture and prayer, and a telling of the Gospel story, the meetings resolved themselves into personal talks, as Korean women understand better in that way. Many decided to believe, and gave their names to the helpers on Sunday after morning service.
It is strange how a helper will take on the manners and the expressions of the Missionary with whom he works. I could recognize Mr. Welbon in one of the helpers and Mr. Clarke in the other. These men did much to make the class successful. If any boys or men curiously strayed to door or window to see what was going on, one heard at once the stern voice of the helper, peremptorily commanding immediate departure. If an unusually large crowd of woman came before I started to plan where to put the new comers, one of the helpers appeared with more mats. Everything possible was done to make it agreeable. It was really very pleasant to have this help.
On my arrival, a letter from Mr. Clarke was given me, asking me not to go to the new site purchased for the missionary houses, lest I cause a rise in real estate. It scarcely looked in that direction, yet I could see it was a fine ridge, something like that at Yun Mok Kol, in Seoul. In the near distance there is a beautiful range of blue hills,—Wun Ju is a lovely place, altogether. I had a one kan room with an outside window, giving ventilation, for which I was grateful. A baby and a donkey rendered the nights thoughtful.
Ko Soor, 26 October. We had a fairly early start and arrived at this place in the evening before it was quite dark, having come 30 miles. It had rained all of Sunday, and up to three o'clock on Monday morning, but the coolies made no complaints as to roads. Women came to study from No-rum-tol, twenty li away, Yong-mo-ree, twenty-five li away, Tai-tai-ool, thirty li away, Sung-dai-dong, fourty li away, Chaw-roon, twenty li away. At first we had a strenuous time, but at last, some of the sisters seemed to have learned a little. All were ignorant, and some stupid also. One women knew just enough to tell the others they didn't know anything and could not learn. My whole effort was to suppress this sister without hurting her feelings, and to encourage the others till they could learn. We made great efforts to sing the first eight hymns in the New Union Hymn book. By beginning at the first of the book, and going on, we did not have to take time finding the numbers, for to most women this process consumes a lot of time. All made some progress on the study of the Gospel. We all went preaching from house to house, and many sight seers came to Church.
Presents of eggs and chestnuts and of gourds became embarrassing, as one's possessions are limited to what one coolie can carry on his back. The girls who came to the class often came with hot, roasted and hulled chestnuts clasped tightly in their hands and then presented them to me at the close.
My room was heated by the kettle which cooked the ox's food. A high slope was outside the window. It was found very profitable to stretch a clothes' line here for my blankets etc. every day.
The last evening after prayerful farewells from the dear sisters, I thought everything finished. But the next morning they were all there for three or four more "good bye's" all round again, although it was so early we left by star shine.
KANG CHUN PYUL-MAI. We reached here by four in the afternoon, having made very good time. On Sunday the Church at Koo-ree-mee was crowded with woman. After service we went about preaching here and also at the village in Kang Chun. A number of "yang ban" places were visited, as well as others. We were well received. One woman said she had believed seven years before, but that she gave up five years ago. A Christian sister who was with me told her she was "dol jak bot", stony ground, remembering the parable of the sower. Women are here from Poo-row-ee, 10 li away and from the near by villages of Koo-ree-mee and Kang Chun.
On the journey many pheasants were seen, and at this place, the air was full of the voices of wild geese flying past. The sisters brought me many presents; chestnuts, persimmons and new turnips. Flies are in swarms. "Pinday" (bugs) cockroaches and fleas abound. Mrs. Yun kindly puts my things on the line and searches. It is with great zest that she reports the number discovered and slain. Her gestures and expressions are indescribable.
There was a threshing floor outside my window, and I enjoyed seeing it and remembering how such is mentioned in the Bible. The sisters here seemed to learn, but the woman from Poo-row-ee is so very bright that the others suffered in comparison. At all of these places I had the distinction of being the first foreign women there. When we left for Kojon, the Poo-row-ee sister went the ten li to her home with us. Her husband met us with Christian greetings. She enjoyed riding in my chair a part of the way, after I had with difficulty persuaded her I liked walking.
The coolies begged me to stop at Kojon although we reached it before sunset. They declared we had come 200 li. I found the inn keeper was a particular friend of theirs. The inn people proudly conducted me to a room with clean mats. It was seven feet square and had only a door. There was not a vestige of any other opening of any kind. I exchanged with a room intended for the coolies. This had windows. There was a great beating of mats by hostesses and coolies. The place could not have been dusted for cycles of years. We afterward sprinkled and swept the floor and washed the mats with a wet cloth. We had a perfect sneezing concert. Cockroaches were all about, even crawling on one's pillow, the cubical block of wood. That mice also were among my companions, I found later. During the day we met insurgents on the road, and the coolies had talked about them. It had made me think of the American Indians, and of how they used to scalp people. From peaceful slumbers I woke with a vivid impression that I was being scalped, to find a mouse tangled in my hair, which had evidently been in the course of his rapid transit across the floor. To the most of us it has seemed as if we could never hold a mouse in the hand, but if given the alternative of having it wriggling against one's neck or snatching it away,—judgment and action are then simultaneous.
The coolies rose at three, and had a joyful time laughing and conversing with their hosts while the rice kettle steamed. We waited for the first streaks of dawn before starting. These coolies were the best I ever had, they never complained, and they asked me to take them again whenever I went. They did not like to carry Mrs. Yun. She preached to them incessantly, dwelling particularly upon the extremely high degree of heat of the place to which they would surely go if they did not leave off drinking "sool" and believe. One has heard of a dentist converting his patient when he was speechless and could not escape, but this was a variation. The poor coolies walked along for miles, speechless with rage while Mrs. Yun's exhortations continued.
HAING JU. It was pleasant to arrive among old friends, and find everyone enthusiastic about studying. However a heavy frost came, and prepared the "pa chu", cabbage, for "kim chee" or pickle making. The women were busy at once, so could not spend all of the time studying. The girls, however, attended very well, and learned a great deal. They learned the Italian Hymn and the Portuguese Hymn so they could sing them without the book. There is a flourishing boy's school here. The school master wears foreign dress. The boys asked me if they might attend the class in the evening to learn hymns. They came, and sat on the men's side. Myung-ny Aminie, one of the leading Christian women here, who once attended a class in Seoul, has had great sorrow; her husband was drowned in the river in the last rainy season. He was a fisherman.
SAMWEE. When we go to the Church for study the school boys love to exhibit their skill in performing on the horizontal bars belonging to the school. The school master is in foreign dress. The young women and girls are specially well taught at this place, much to the credit of Sin Chang No. One girl knows fifty questions and answers in the shorter catechism.
CHAI JANG HAL. We staid at this place, in the same room, very dark, as last year. The pins I had lost here were carefully stack above the window, waiting for me. A woman has had a headache for three months. She has returned from the Severance Hospital with medicine from the dispensary, and she believes she will soon be well. A little boy, eight years old, comes to our evening meetings with his sister. He reads well and learns quickly. His parents are entirely illiterate, but he has attended the school at Sam-wee, with excellent effect.

(J. Wilson Reed) M.D.
pp. 183-184
I arrived in Seoul in April, 1907, and was assigned to the buildings. I have been occupied with the construction of missionary houses, and medical work is being planned in connection with the new construction at Songdo.
Early in the year I made a trip to Japan, and since my return have been married. The hospital at Songdo is now in process of construction, and I am endeavoring to make my medical work more effective.
The building work has encountered many difficulties more than anticipated, but considerable progress has been made during the past year. The construction of houses in Seoul, the operation of a medical clinic, and the construction plans for the Songdo Hospital are the principal undertakings.
I am grateful for the prayers and material support given by the denomination and the people for all these enterprises. I pray that all the planned undertakings may be completed under the guidance of the Lord.
Respectfully submitted,
J. WILSON REED

We beg the pardon of our readers for the typographical errors which appeared in our last issue. Especially are we sorry for the mistakes in the spelling of proper names. We shall endeavor to be more careful in the future.
We have to record with sorrow the accidental death of Rev. Sidebotham. He was engaged in the work of the gospel when he was called away. We mourn with those who mourn, and commend his memory to the keeping of Him who careth.
The revival meetings which have been held recently have been a blessing to many believers. Through such gatherings we see the Lord's work continuing in Korea.

(Miss Lillian E. Nichols)
p. 186
Carolina Institute is a girls' school located in Seoul with sixty-five students in attendance. The curriculum includes Bible study, Korean language, English, arithmetic, geography and other subjects designed to give a good general education.
Under the devoted service of Miss Dye and the direction of Mrs. Campbell, the students are making progress both spiritually and academically. Miss Dye has been connected with the school since its founding, and her influence on Christian education for Korean women has been most significant.
The greatest needs of the school at present are the securing of additional teachers and the expansion of classroom space. We ask for prayers and support for the spiritual growth and academic development of our students.

The Lucy Cunniggim Memorial School is a girls' boarding school located in Wonsan with twenty-nine pupils in attendance. The school receives support from the Woman's Missionary Society of Illinois.
The students are very bright and eager to learn. The aptness of Korean girls for study and their spiritual growth is remarkable. The school provides balanced education on the foundation of Christian faith.
The industrial department of the school teaches practical skills such as sewing and handicrafts to the students. This department plays an important role in developing the students' ability to become self-reliant after graduation.
Within the school there is an organization called the Epworth League, which promotes the students' spiritual growth and consciousness of missionary work.
The school is in great need of scholarships. There are many good students who cannot afford tuition, and scholarship support for them is urgent. We request prayers and financial support from churches and individuals.

(C. G. Hounshell)
pp. 189-190
(Bible Women)
Population. The population of Seoul and the surrounding region is estimated at about five hundred thousand. In this vast population, the proclamation of Christian faith is a challenging but important mission.
Change in Location of Compound. The location of the mission compound has been moved to a new place for several reasons. The new location has the advantage of being more accessible to a larger number of people.
Chakol Church. Chakol Church is one of the principal churches in Seoul, and the number of believers is steadily increasing. This church serves as an important spiritual center in the community.
Little East Gate. This region is where many believers reside, and a community of faith has been established.
Yang Ju. The evangelistic work in the Yang Ju region is also making progress, with many new believers appearing.
P.O. Chyeun and Yeung P'yeung. Missionary work is being actively carried out in these two regions.
A Mission House in Each Magistracy. For more effective missionary work, it is necessary to establish a mission house in each magistracy. The current manpower and resources are insufficient to cover such a wide area.
Native Helpers. For the development of the Korean church, the cultivation of native helpers and lay leadership is very important. Many devoted helpers are supporting the missionary work.
Schools and Education. Schools have been established in several places in the mission area, and younger generation believers are being nurtured through Christian education.
Bible Women. Bible women, as spiritual leaders for women believers, are having a deep impact on the community through house visits and other work.
Urgent Needs. The most urgent needs for missionary work in Seoul are more missionaries, securing of budget, and the cultivation of Korean personnel. When these needs are met, more effective missionary work can be accomplished.

(G. Engel)
p. 191
We are plunged into deep sorrow by the unexpected death of our beloved colleague, Rev. Sidebotham. He had been devoting himself to the Lord's work in Taiku and Fusan.
Rev. Sidebotham was an excellent missionary who loved the Korean people and was willing to dedicate himself to the salvation of their souls. His sphere of activity was wide, and the fruits of his ministry are evident in the churches and believers of Taiku and Fusan.
Though his earthly ministry has ended through a tragic accident, his love and dedication have become an eternal memorial. We pray that his soul rests in the Lord's bosom and remember his family and ministry.
"Be faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." (Revelation 2:10)

(Ellasue C. Wagner)
p. 192
The girls' school in Songdo has sixty-seven pupils in attendance. The school provides both Christian education and general education, and the response of the students has been very good.
Plans for the expansion of the school building are underway. The present facilities are insufficient to accommodate the increasing number of students, and additional classrooms and dormitory construction are needed.
The most urgent need is the securing of more teachers. While the number of students is increasing, there is a shortage of teachers who can adequately instruct them. In particular, the recruitment of qualified teachers who can teach English and Christian faith is urgent.
Material support and prayers are needed for the Songdo girls' school to grow and develop. We ask for understanding of how important it is to nurture the future leaders and mothers of Korea through education, and for your support and encouragement.
