선교사의 장비
신앙의 전사들이 선교지에서 그들의 위대한 사명을 이루기 위해서는 무엇보다 영적인 준비와 인격적 장비가 필수적이다. 선교사의 성공 여부는 학위나 기술의 수준에 의해 결정되지 않으며, 오직 그의 영혼의 깊이와 그리스도의 성품을 얼마나 반영하고 있는가에 의해 결정된다. 선교사가 갖추어야 할 자질들은 단순한 지식이나 기술이 아니라, 깊은 영혼의 경험과 그리스도의 성품에 기초하여야 한다. 다음의 여덟 가지 자질을 모두 갖춘 선교사라면, 어떤 어려움 속에서도 주님의 사역을 온전히 감당할 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 자질들은 서로 깊이 연결되어 있으며, 하나가 빠지면 선교 사역의 효과가 크게 손상될 수 있다. 선교 역사를 살펴보면, 가장 위대한 선교사들은 항상 이러한 자질들을 두루 갖춘 사람들이었다는 것을 알 수 있다.
거룩한 마음과 깊은 영혼의 기도 — 선교사는 무엇보다 먼저 거룩함을 추구해야 하며, 기도의 사람이어야 한다. 날마다 주님 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 기도하는 경건함이 필요하며, 자신의 죄성을 깊이 깨닫고 지속적으로 자신을 제어해야 한다. 시간이 흐르면서 기도의 열정이 식어버리면, 선교사의 영적 생명도 함께 식어버린다. 선교사의 영적 깊이가 얕으면, 선교지 주민들도 깊은 신앙을 갖기 어렵다. 따라서 선교사는 자신의 기도 생활을 최고의 우선순위로 삼아야 하며, 하루하루를 주님 앞에서 사는 경건함을 유지해야 한다.
헌신적인 사랑과 순결한 의도 — 선교사의 모든 행동과 말은 순수한 사랑에서 비롯되어야 하며, 어떤 사리사욕도 섞여있어서는 안 된다. 명예를 원하거나 금전적 이득을 추구하는 마음은 선교 사역을 훼손하고, 주민들의 신뢰를 잃게 한다. 이것은 겉으로 보이는 선행으로는 감추어질 수 없으며, 시간이 지나면 반드시 드러난다. 주민들은 매우 예리한 눈으로 선교사의 진정한 의도를 간파한다.
일관되고 진정한 신앙 — 선교지에서의 어려운 상황 속에서도 신앙의 일관성을 유지해야 하며, 진정한 믿음으로 주님을 의존해야 한다. 환경이 바뀌면 신앙도 변하는 사람은 선교사가 될 수 없다. 어려움 속에서도 하나님의 주권을 신뢰하는 일관된 신앙이 선교사의 가장 큰 자산이다.
부지런함과 성실성 — 게으르지 않고 열심히 일하며, 모든 책임을 성실하게 감당하는 태도가 필요하다. 선교 사역은 육체의 피로를 요구하는 일이 많으며, 게으른 선교사는 주민들의 존경을 잃는다. 성실함은 말로가 아니라 행동으로 증명된다.
겸손함과 낮은 자세 — 자신의 능력을 자랑하지 않고 낮은 마음으로 주민들을 섬겨야 한다. 선교사가 자신의 문명과 지식을 자랑하면, 주민들은 복음보다 문명의 우월성에 주목하게 된다. 참된 겸손은 선교 사역을 더욱 효과적이게 만든다.
인내심과 불굴의 정신 — 선교 사업은 장기간의 인내를 요구한다. 즉각적인 열매를 기대하지 않고 오랜 기간 인내하는 정신이 필수적이며, 어려움을 도중에 포기하지 않는 불굴의 의지가 필요하다. 초대 선교사들도 수십 년을 투자하여 겨우 작은 교회를 세웠으며, 이것이 선교의 현실이다.
주의 말씀에 대한 깊은 이해 — 성경에 대한 철저한 학습과 이해가 필요하며, 이를 바탕으로 주민들을 올바르게 가르칠 수 있어야 한다. 선교사 자신이 성경을 충분히 알지 못하면, 이단의 거짓 가르침에 대해 효과적으로 대응할 수 없다. 성경의 깊은 이해는 선교사의 교리적 기초를 제공한다.
현지 주민들을 향한 깊은 동정심과 사랑 — 선교사는 자신이 섬기는 주민들을 진정으로 사랑해야 하며, 그들의 고통과 필요를 이해하는 동정심이 있어야 한다. 주민들에 대한 진정한 사랑 없이는 어떤 선교 기술도 효과적이지 않다. 이것이야말로 모든 선교 사역의 근본이며, 이것 없이는 다른 모든 자질도 의미가 없다. 주민들은 선교사의 진정한 사랑을 감지하며, 이것이 복음 전파의 가장 강력한 도구가 된다.
A MISSIONARY'S EQUIPMENT

To fulfill the sacred calling of the missionary, spiritual preparation and Christian character are absolutely essential. The success of the missionary is determined not by academic degree or technical skill, but rather by the depth of his soul and the degree to which he reflects the nature of Christ. The qualities that a missionary must possess are not merely intellectual knowledge or technical skill, but rather those virtues which spring from deep spiritual experience and the character of Christ Himself. The missionary who possesses all of the following eight qualities shall be enabled to carry out the work of the Lord through every difficulty and trial. These qualities are interconnected, and the absence of one significantly diminishes the effectiveness of missionary labor. A study of missionary history shows that the greatest missionaries have always possessed these qualities in fullness.
A HOLY HEART AND DEEP PRAYERFULNESS OF SOUL — The missionary must above all seek holiness and must be a person of prayer. Daily devotion, kneeling before the Lord with earnest intercession, is essential. The missionary must gain deep self-knowledge regarding sinfulness and exercise constant vigilance over the heart. As time passes, if the fervor of prayer grows cold, the spiritual life of the missionary grows cold likewise. If the missionary's spiritual depth is shallow, the native peoples will likewise be hindered from gaining deep faith. Therefore, the missionary must make prayer the highest priority and maintain piety in daily living before the Lord.
DEVOTED LOVE AND PURE INTENTION — All the missionary's actions and words must spring from love that is pure and undiluted by any selfishness or unworthy motive. The desire for honor or the pursuit of financial gain corrupts missionary work and destroys the trust of the people. This cannot be concealed by outward good works; with time it shall surely be revealed. The people discern with keen perception the missionary's true intention.
CONSISTENT AND GENUINE FAITH — Even in the difficult circumstances of mission work, the missionary must maintain steadfast faith and genuine reliance upon the Lord. One whose faith changes with changing circumstances cannot be a true missionary. Consistent faith in God's sovereignty amid difficulty is the missionary's greatest asset.
DILIGENCE AND INTEGRITY — The missionary must work faithfully without sloth, meeting every responsibility with honesty and trustworthiness. Missionary work often demands physical labor and weariness, and the lazy missionary loses the respect of the people. Integrity is proven not by words but by actions.
HUMILITY AND LOWLINESS OF SPIRIT — The missionary must not boast of his abilities but must serve the people with a humble and contrite heart. If the missionary glorifies his own civilization and learning, the native peoples will focus on the superiority of civilization rather than upon the gospel. True humility renders missionary work more effective.
PATIENCE AND UNFAILING PERSEVERANCE — Missionary work demands endurance over many years and decades. The missionary must not expect quick results but must persevere faithfully through long periods of seeming failure. An indomitable spirit that does not abandon the task in difficulty is absolutely necessary. The pioneer missionaries invested decades to establish only a small church, and this is the reality of the missionary enterprise.
A THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORD OF GOD — Diligent study and mastery of Scripture is required, so that the missionary may teach the people truth and righteousness. If the missionary himself does not thoroughly know Scripture, he cannot effectively respond to the false teachings of heresy. Deep understanding of Scripture provides the missionary with doctrinal foundation.
DEEP SYMPATHY AND LOVE FOR THE NATIVE PEOPLE — The missionary must truly love the people whom he serves, and must possess sympathy that understands their sufferings and addresses their deepest needs. Without genuine love for the people, no missionary technique can be effective. This is the foundation of all missionary work, and without it, all other qualities become meaningless. The people perceive the missionary's genuine love, which becomes the most powerful instrument for the proclamation of the gospel.
SHOULD THE CHILDREN OF MISSIONARIES BE EDUCATED?

평양의 학교 사례 — 평양에서 운영되고 있는 학교는 이 문제의 해결 가능성을 보여주는 훌륭한 모델이다. 이 학교는 무려 9년간 지속적으로 운영되어 온 검증된 기관이며, 현재 19명의 학생이 다니고 있다. 학교의 주요 역할은 선교사 자녀들에게 기초 교육을 제공하는 것이지만, 동시에 현지 아동들도 입학을 허용함으로써 지역 사회에 대한 봉사도 실천하고 있다. 이는 선교사 자녀 교육과 지역 사회 개발을 동시에 추구하는 우수한 모델이다. 이러한 사례는 선교지 내에서 학교를 설립하는 것이 결코 불가능한 일이 아니며, 오히려 선교 활동 전체의 효율성을 높일 수 있음을 명백히 보여준다.
권고사항 — 모든 선교부는 선교지 내에 학교를 설립하거나, 최소한 교육 지원 프로그램을 체계화해야 한다. 이는 단순한 개별 가정의 문제가 아니라 전체 선교 효율성과 직결된 중요한 사항이다. 우리가 지금 취하는 조치가 향후 한국 선교지의 발전을 크게 좌우할 것이다. 선교사들이 자녀 교육으로 인한 걱정을 덜 수 있다면, 그들은 본래의 전도와 목양 사역에 더욱 집중할 수 있게 된다.
【英文 Original】The Education of Missionary Children — The education of children of missionaries has long been a question too neglected in missionary work. Many missionaries face the double burden of rearing their children while simultaneously carrying out their ministerial duties in the mission field. Parents are deeply concerned about the lack of adequate educational opportunities for their growing children, and this concern inevitably affects the efficiency of their missionary labors. Some missionaries have been forced to leave the field to provide education for their children, causing serious team disruption. Recognizing this problem's seriousness, the Presbyterian Board has authorized an annual grant of one hundred dollars for children's allowance, representing the Church's first systematic policy decision on this matter.
The Pyeng Yang School Example — The school operated at Pyeng Yang provides an excellent model demonstrating this problem's solvability. This tested institution has operated continuously for nine years with nineteen pupils. While providing basic education for missionary children, it also admits local children, serving the broader community. This represents an exemplary model of simultaneously pursuing missionary children's education and community development. This example clearly demonstrates that establishing schools within mission fields is entirely feasible and indeed enhances overall missionary efficiency.
Recommendations — Every missionary board should establish schools within mission fields or, at minimum, systemize educational support programs. This is not merely an individual family matter but one directly affecting overall missionary efficiency. The measures we now adopt will profoundly influence the Korea field's future development. When missionaries are relieved of anxieties regarding their children's education, they can concentrate more fully upon their primary responsibilities of evangelism and pastoral care.
NORTH CHULLA NOTES, CHUNJU

O.) 맥쿠첸(McCutchen) 목사가 조세핀 하운스트렐(Josephine Hounstrel) 양과의 결혼식을 올렸으며, 75명의 사역자들이 영적 교제를 위해 모였다. 레이놀즈(Reynolds) 사람이 제공한 스테레옵티콘 화상은 모임을 더욱 의미 있게 만들었다. 전주 지역의 영적 성장 통계는 매우 고무적이다. 56명의 구도자(catechumens)가 신앙 교육을 받고 있으며, 51명이 세례를 받았다. 주일학교는 505명이 참석하는 규모로 성장했으며, 맥케이(Mackay) 선교부에서 파견된 우수한 교사가 교육 사역을 강화하고 있다. 이러한 수치들은 주님의 은혜가 얼마나 크신지를 보여준다.
【英文】Gladsome tidings continue to flow forth from the Chunju field. Rev. L. O. McCutchen has recently returned with his bride, Miss Josephine Hounstrel, bringing fresh strength to the mission. Seventy-five workers from various stations assembled for spiritual fellowship and encouragement. The stereopticon views presented by Mr. Reynolds greatly enlivened the proceedings. Spiritual progress is most encouraging: fifty-six catechumens receiving instruction in the faith, fifty-one baptized, Sunday school attendance of five hundred and five pupils, and a capable teacher from Mackay mission strengthening educational work. These figures testify to the Lord's grace.

Robb | 【한글】동해안 지역의 선교 사역은 기쁨과 슬픔이 섞인 현장이다. 원산(Wonsan)의 하디(Hardie) 의사와 그 부인은 최근 깊은 슬픔을 경험했다. 그들의 사랑하는 딸 조이(Joy)가 겨우 5세의 어린 나이에 천국으로 부름을 받은 것이다. 이 소식은 모든 선교 가족의 마음을 아프게 했으며, 우리는 이 가정을 위해 기도해야 한다. 한편 기쁜 소식도 들려온다. 마이어스(Myers) 선교사가 원산으로 복귀했으며, 질병으로 고생하던 쿠퍼(Cooper) 선교사는 건강을 회복했다. 이러한 소식은 선교팀의 사역 역량이 다시금 강화됨을 의미한다. 그리어슨(Grierson) 사람은 성진(Song Chin) 지역에서 놀라운 영적 각성이 일어나고 있다고 보고했다. 주님의 성령이 이 지역에 강력하게 역사하고 있으며, 많은 주민들이 신앙으로 돌아오고 있다. 그러나 함경도(Ham Kyong province) 지역에서는 심각한 기근이 발생하여 주민들의 생명을 위협하고 있다.

Dr. and Mrs. Hardie of Wonsan have recently experienced profound sorrow in the loss of their beloved daughter, Joy, only five years of age. The news has grieved the hearts of the entire missionary family, and we offer our earnest prayers. Yet glad tidings also reach us. Miss Myers has returned to Wonsan, strengthening the missionary force. Miss Cooper has been restored to health from serious illness. Mr. Grierson reports a great awakening in the Song Chin district, where the Holy Spirit is moving powerfully. Yet famine has broken out in Ham Kyong province, threatening the lives of many. We must labor in combined relief and gospel ministry.

Mr. Kim's conversion has brought great encouragement; once spiritually indifferent, he has become a faithful helper and example to others. More remarkable is the conversion of the red-faced drunkard, once notorious for intoxication, now standing as a member of the faith community. 【한글】전주 선교소는 테이트(Tate) 양, 엘 비(L.B.) 테이트(Tate) 목사 등 헌신적인 사역자들로 구성되어 있다. 영적 성장 통계: 여러 예배 장소, 성찬식 참여자 다수, 세례 받은 자 51명, 구도자 56명. 의료 사역을 통해 육체적 필요를 충족시키면서 영적 복음을 전하고 있다. 교육: 주일학교는 505명이 참석하는 규모로 성장했다. 성경 번역: 열왕기(II Kings) 번역 완료, 이사야부터 판사기 중간까지 번역 진행 중. 맥쿠첸 목사의 전도 활동: 202명의 성인 신자 영접, 12개의 교회 건물 건설, 10개의 새로운 예배 장소 개설.
군산 지역의 의료 선교는 육체의 질병과 영혼의 질병을 동시에 다루는 중요한 사역이다. 오(Oh) 의사의 헌신적인 노고는 지역 주민들의 의료 필요를 충족시키고 있다. 최근 기간의 병원 사역 통계: 입원 및 외래 환자 144명, 수술 182건. 강도들로부터 17번이나 칼에 맞은 남자의 경우, 오 의사의 신속한 응급 처치와 정교한 수술로 생명을 구할 수 있었다. 더욱 인상적인 것은 170~300 마일 떨어진 지역에서 치료를 받기 위해 여행해 온 환자들이다. 이들은 의료 진료뿐 아니라 복음의 메시지도 함께 받으며, 향후 자신의 지역에서 신앙의 증인이 될 수 있다.

Scripture translation: Second Kings completed, Isaiah through Judges in progress. Mr. McCutchen's evangelistic work: two hundred and two believers received, twelve churches established, ten new meeting places opened. Medical work at Kunsan addresses both physical infirmities and spiritual hunger. Dr. Oh labors faithfully: one hundred and forty-four patients treated, one hundred and eighty-two operations performed. One man bearing seventeen wounds from robbers had his life preserved. Patients from one hundred and seventy to three hundred miles distant receive gospel message along with medical care.
