AN INTERESTING TOUR THROUGH KOREA'S CANADA

FROM SEOUL TO THE INTERIOR OF KANDO, A STRANGE RAILWAY.

This is really an account of a journey through Kando. From Seoul by train to Fusan, 275 miles, thence by steamer to Wonsan, and again by steamer to Chong Chin away in the northeast of Korea. From there we saw a strange railway from Chong Chin to Kando—a flat trolley pushed by two coolies.

Kando may truly be called Korea's Canada. It is a land of vast agricultural wealth and of mineral riches. The spiritual outlook for Koreans in Kando is also most interesting; the opportunities for these Koreans to obtain the Word of God are great.

The result of five weeks of travel with the observation of the colporteurs and Bible Society work has been most gratifying. The journey from Seoul has been difficult, and we have encountered many hardships and trials, yet we have witnessed the earnest faith and zeal of Korean Christians.

The journey from Fusan to Wonsan was pleasant, and the passage from there to Chong Chin was also interesting. Chong Chin is far away in the northeast, a very remote location. There we saw the strange railway of which I have already spoken—a flat trolley pushed by natives, running on rails like a train.

We then crossed the Tuman River and entered the territory of Kando. Passing a Japanese military outpost, we climbed over difficult mountain passes and crossed the Horangi Kol—the savage pass. The roads were very rough, mountain scenery opened up before us, but with the assistance of our native guides and companions, we were able to travel safely.

When we visited various villages in Kando, both Christian and non-Christian inhabitants received us warmly. The Christians were particularly enthusiastic and showed great interest in the work of the Bible Society. In some villages the residents were so receptive that many desired to purchase Bibles and religious books.

At Yong Dong Chong we met Chinese officials. They manifested various reactions to the migration of Koreans into this region. Some officials were open-minded, while others were cautious. Nevertheless, they generally showed a considerable degree of tolerance towards the work of religious mission.

The Korean settlements in Kando were showing remarkable development. Agriculture was well developed, and many Koreans were beginning new lives. The Christian community in this region was also growing, and faithful leaders were directing the churches.

During five weeks of travel, I witnessed how devotedly the colporteurs of the Bible Society were laboring. They climbed over difficult mountain paths and went to remote villages to distribute Bibles and religious books. Many people were grateful for their efforts, and their work was playing a great role in spreading the Word of God among the Korean people.

Through this journey, I became convinced that Kando is truly Korea's Canada. It is a vast, undeveloped region possessing unlimited potential for agriculture and mining. And from a spiritual viewpoint, it presents a great opportunity for Christian mission. As Koreans are beginning new lives here, they are at the same time embracing Christian faith.

The results of this journey were most encouraging. Christian communities have been formed in many villages, and the demand for Bibles and religious books is very high. If the work of the colporteurs continues, Christian faith is expected to take deep root in the Korean community of Kando.

BIBLE SOCIETY SUNDAY IN KOREA

Bible Sunday was first observed in May 1899. Since that time Korean churches have commemorated this day on the second Sunday of May each year. This year, on Sunday, May 2, 1909, special services were held in several churches in Seoul.

In the early morning service, sermons were preached on the importance of Scripture and the work of Bible translation. Many church members gathered to commemorate this important day together.

A special service was also held at the Young Men's Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.). This service was arranged particularly for young people and emphasized the work of the Bible Society and the importance of Bible translation.

At the English Church, Bishop Turner delivered the sermon. He spoke forcefully about how precious the Bible is and how important the work of its translation is.

At the Union Church, Rev. J.S. Gale preached. Pastor Gale gave a detailed account of the progress of Bible translation in Korea and the plans ahead.

Country churches also held special meetings to commemorate this day. Though more modest than those in the cities, rural believers also recognized the importance of the Bible Society's work and commemorated it together.

Bible Sunday has become not merely the commemoration of one day, but an important event that emphasizes the importance of the Bible, which is central to Christian faith.

EDITORIAL

The annual reports from the various missions have been received. The Secretary of the Missionary Board reported that the work in Korea is making notable progress. Christian faith is spreading in various regions, and the role of native Christians is becoming increasingly important.

The Fifth Annual Meeting of the General Council of Protestant Missions is scheduled for September 16-17. This will be an important gathering of representatives from all Protestant missionary societies in Korea.

Some missions are planning special events to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of missionary work in Korea.

MEMORIAL: MRS. LITTLETON SMITHY COLLYER

Mrs. Littleton Smithy Collyer, beloved by many, was called to her heavenly home on February 5, 1909, at Pyeng Yang. Born in Jettersville, Virginia, in 1831, she received an education and began missionary work in Soochow, China. Arriving in China on September 14, 1890, she devoted herself to educational and missionary work for many years.

Arriving in Korea in 1897, she carried on missionary work with her husband, Rev. C.T. Collyer, in Seoul and Songdo. She took a special interest in the education of women and guided and instructed many Korean women. Her faithful missionary work and exemplary life inspired many people.

GENERAL COUNCIL AND VISITORS

Visitors expected to attend the General Council Meeting include Dr. Arthur J. Brown, Bishop Ward, and Bishop Harris. Their visit is expected to be a great encouragement to the Korean mission.

'BETHANY' HOME FOR MISSIONARIES

The devoted work of Miss Pinder, who manages the 'Bethany' home, a place of rest for missionaries, continues. This home is a precious place where weary missionaries can take adequate rest.

EXPANDING THE CIRCULATION OF THIS PUBLICATION

The General Council of Protestant Missions wishes to increase the subscription to this publication. We are encouraging all those interested in the Korean mission to become familiar with this publication and subscribe to it.

MISSIONARY ON FURLOUGH

In April 1909, Dr. Mary M. Cutler, M.D., of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Church, left Korea for home furlough.

SURVEY OF WORK FOR THE BLIND IN KOREA DURING THE FIRST DECADE

During the past ten years of work for the blind in Korea, I have witnessed many miraculous deeds. Things that at first seemed almost impossible are now becoming reality.

BAZAAR AND PROGRAM FOR BLIND GIRLS

Last year we held a bazaar and program for blind girls. Through this, we were able to show society what the blind can do.

VISIT TO SEOUL AND THE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

With Pauline I visited Seoul and met with the Medical Association. There we met Hon. Yun Che Oh of the Bureau of Education and Mr. Rockwell. They showed deep interest in education for the blind.

PAULINE'S DEMONSTRATIONS

Pauline demonstrated her abilities in reading Korean and English, letter-writing, arithmetic, geography, knitting, and singing. Through this she showed that the blind can be educated and can contribute to society.

VISITS FROM PROMINENT PERSONS

Prominent persons introduced by Hon. Yun and Bishop Harris visited. Bishop Harris especially praised our educational programs for the blind. We had an opportunity to demonstrate our program at the Governor's residence.

TOUR OF SOUTHERN REGIONS

We made a tour of southern regions including Chemulpo, Suwon, and Song-do. In each region we emphasized the necessity for education of the blind.

GROWTH OF STUDENTS

Currently twenty-four blind girls have enrolled in the school. The personal stories of each student, such as Kumie and Mrs. No, show how meaningful our work is.

INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT

We received support of thirty pounds from Mr. Hugh Miller of the British Foreign Bible Society. This support greatly helped our work.

EDUCATIONAL METHODS AND HELEN KELLER

We are conducting education for the blind in Korea with reference to Helen Keller's educational methods. We are pursuing a balanced approach in sensory education, practical skills training, and mental development.

WORK FOR THE DEAF

We have also begun work for the deaf. We sent Yi Ik Min to Chefoo to learn methods of deaf education. There are more than 14,000 deaf in Korea, and the pressing need for their care requires immediate attention.

REQUEST FOR A COMMITTEE AT THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE

We are requesting the organization of a committee to oversee work for the deaf at the annual conference. Systematic and continuous support is necessary for this work to succeed.
