THE KOREA MISSION FIELD

Chong Ju Special Number — Vol. V, No. 8

SEOUL, KOREA, 15th AUGUST, 1909

표지 시는 17세기 프랑스 카르멜회 수사 Brother Lawrence의 『The Practice of the Presence of God』에서 인용하였다.

IN MEMORIAM — Rev. Clement C. Owen, M.D.

The Rev. Clement C. Owen, M.D., died at Kwang Ju on April 3rd, 1909. The news flashed by telegraph brought deep sorrow to the entire mission community in Korea. Dr. Owen was born in Virginia in 1867; he graduated from Hampden-Sidney College in 1889, and from Union Theological Seminary in 1897. The following year he took his medical degree. He arrived in Korea in November, 1898, and first settled at Mok-po for medical and evangelistic work. In 1904 he removed to Kwang Ju where he helped to lay the foundation stones of the Southern Presbyterian station in South Chulla Province.

Dr. Owen's service in Korea was less than eleven years, but within that brief span he was marvelously fruitful. His progress in the Korean language was noteworthy. The fact that the country people and the Christian communities in the remote villages of Kang-jin, Chang-heung, Neung-ju, and Hwa-sun have wept at his graveside is token enough that the seed he sowed has already begun to yield a rich harvest.

His last illness came suddenly. Shortly after his return from a two-weeks' itinerating trip, the fever developed and pneumonia was diagnosed. Though he knew the illness might prove fatal, his spirit was serene, and one of his last words was a prayer for his four little daughters.

He leaves a wife and four young children. Mrs. Owen had herself come to Korea as a medical missionary before her marriage, and so her name might properly appear on the list of physicians printed in this issue. As we stand beside the grave in Kwang Ju, we commit this beloved brother into the hands of the Lord, praying for the overflowing comfort of the Lord to attend his family and the people among whom he has served.

— J. FAIRMAN PRESTON.

"The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer; and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament."

THE DELIGHTFUL STATION OF CHONG-JU

James S. Gale (제임스 S. 게일)

The newest of our Northern Presbyterian stations in Korea is Chong-ju. This is not the Chong-ju of the Southern Methodists or Southern Presbyterians, but the capital of the Province of Choong Chung in the southern part of Korea. The district has long been known to Seoul, and from there it has been regarded as a region of devout disposition. Chong-ju is about fifty miles south of Seoul and twenty miles southeast of Cho-chi-won station on the Seoul-Fusan Railway. Its population numbers about 20,000. From the hills that surround it one may look down upon a network of rice-fields and dry lands spreading for miles, quiet streams flowing at their ease, and villages of thatched roofs laid out in orderly fashion on either side.

In the town are the traces of an ancient yamen, old walls, the Confucian School (Hyangkyo), and streets of several centuries' memory. Chong-ju was likewise a place of stern contest during the Imjin invasion of 1592, and the marks of that time may be seen here and there.

The station at Chong-ju was opened in the spring of 1907. The Rev. F. S. Miller with a Korean helper came as the pioneer and chose the first location. He was joined later by Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Purviance, the Rev. and Mrs. Edwin Kagin, and single lady missionaries. Today the station has a full complement of pastor, physician, teacher, and nurse. Besides the city church, there are more than a dozen meeting places in the surrounding district.

The charm of Chong-ju is that it presents a balanced beauty as a field for mission work. The hills enfold it as a screen, the climate is temperate, the water is clean. The people are gentle and industrious, and not a few are open to the Gospel. Chong-ju is a quieter sister-city of Korea — neither as clamorous as Pyong Yang nor as busy as Seoul — but with its own quiet strength it works for the Kingdom of God.

— JAMES S. GALE.

A LETTER FROM CHONG JU

Dear Friends in the East, — I am sending you a few lines of our first impressions of Chong Ju. The journey was on the whole pleasant — by rail to Cho-chi-won and thence by Korean chair between hills and streams to Chong Ju. The hills here are low and rounded, clothed with pines and oaks.

Our station lies outside the town, upon a low hill. There are three foreign-style dwellings, and a little way off is the dispensary. Building has gone on with patience since last year, and by the time we came the roofs alone were left to finish. Some of you were the givers of those tiles, and I should like to write your names on each one.

Friends in the distance, I am watching the sight of people walking thirty or forty or sixty li each Sabbath to come to worship. The men come in their white coats, and the women with babies upon their backs and bundles on their heads. When we watch them listening to the story of Jesus, we know anew how thankful we are to have been brought here.

The dispensary was opened yesterday afternoon, and the demand already overflows our resources. Patients are brought in from many villages on the backs of oxen or upon litters, and the tales of their injuries and illnesses would break one's heart. Please hold us up in your prayers.

If some day you can come up this hill, I should like to share with you the quiet dignity of this landscape. In the morning the mist settles in the valleys, and above it the smoke of the village rises; the cocks crow and the children laugh, and out in the fields men plough. And when the Sabbath morning comes, the sound of a small church bell rings out over all these sounds.

— ESTHER LUCAS SHIELDS.

건축 (Building)

BUILDING

Edwin Kagin (에드윈 카긴)

The building of a new mission station is not a matter of brick and mortar and tile alone. Its foundation is prayer and patience, and the small bricks of daily obedience laid up one by one. Building at Chong Ju station began with the selection of the site in the spring of 1907. Upon a low hill three foreign-style dwellings, a dispensary, and the foundations of school and church buildings have been successively laid.

The Korean workmen are wonderfully quick, and the amount of stone and earth they move is many times that of a Western laborer. The women too climb the slopes with water-jars upon their heads, and the boys run up and down carrying small loads, rejoicing as they go. From this scene of labor we are daily learning the strength and industry of the Korean people.

Building work is mingled with language study, itineration, evangelism and dispensary duty, so that for the missionary-builder twenty-four hours in a day are not enough. But in the evening, as one looks upon the new posts and beams, and at the tiles complete, weariness is turned into thanksgiving. These buildings will be used for the Kingdom of God for decades to come.

DOMESTIC PROBLEMS

W. C. Purviance, M.D.

The physician in a new station faces many domestic problems besides the practice of medicine. The preparation of food, the securing of fuel, the question of milk, the training of servants, and the partial adaptation of a Korean kitchen to Western use — all these fall to him and his wife. In doing all this together, we feel that "survival" itself is a quiet discipline of medical mission.

Our milk supply has been this: a Korean family in the village milks the cow, and a Japanese family in a neighboring village pasteurizes it and sends it to us. But in midsummer this process is still uncertain, and on certain days we have had to give the milk to our rabbits instead of our baby. Nevertheless no great harm has come, and we have been thankful.

Coal is expensive, firewood is scarce, and from the Koreans we have learned to dry and burn the husks of grain. When the light flickers in the brazier at night, we have felt for the first time the sense that "this is our home."

SOME FEATURES OF MEDICAL WORK IN CHONG JU

W. C. Purviance, M.D.

When we opened the little dispensary, the first patient was an old woman who could not walk. For years she had been crippled with hip disease, and her family carried her over the mountains on a litter. I could not cure her entirely, but I relieved her pain greatly, and on leaving she said to her son, "Now tell me who this Jesus is."

Skin diseases are numerous, owing to the village custom of sharing the ponds and streams. Scabies, eczema, and old ulcers appear on the daily list. Small surgical cases follow, and tooth-extraction is regarded as something between a miracle and a magic. The children who lose their teeth run out into the street holding the extracted tooth and showing it to their neighbors.

The diseases of little children weigh upon my heart in a special way. The infant mortality is indescribable, and the mothers receive the death of their babies as a fate. Each week I quietly teach several mothers the principles of hygiene, nursing, and weaning. After a year, I pray this seed may sprout and save the lives of one or two babies.

Our relation with native doctors is on the whole friendly. They call me the "foreign doctor" and more often they ask my opinion on difficult cases. I do not despise them. In the system of herbs and observations they have built up over hundreds of years there is wisdom not to be discarded, and I have much to learn from them.

Above all, evangelism is central. With every patient I try to say, however briefly, the name of Jesus. Our medicine may cure the body for a time, but peace of soul comes only through Jesus Christ. If we cannot give both these cures together, we must ourselves be ashamed to be called medical missionaries.

A GLIMPSE AT WOMEN'S WORK IN CHONGJU

Mrs. Lulu Byram Purviance (룰루 바이럼 퍼비언스 부인)

Since women's work was begun in Chong Ju we have had many unforeseen experiences. On the first Sabbath, when I saw a young woman with a small baby on her back walk thirty li to the morning service, I felt anew how deep is the spiritual hunger of the women of this land.

We have organized the women's work in three ways. First, the Sabbath morning service for women, at which Sunday-school lessons are also held. Second, a weekly evening prayer meeting for women on a set evening, at which the leading women of each village are urged to bring the younger sisters of their own villages. Third, twice a year, a ten-day Bible class (sagyung hoi) for concentrated Bible study, with lodging provided here for those coming from distant villages.

A great grace this year is that we have been able to set apart a Bible Woman. She is a native of Chong Ju, reads the Korean Bible fluently, and is a kind teacher for the young women learning to read. Between classes I go out with her on itineration to the surrounding villages. When she tells the story of Mary and Martha with devout care, it is a great joy to me to see the faces of the listening women brighten.

Our girls' school was begun last spring with eight pupils. By the end of the year the number was sixteen, and at the beginning of this term there are twenty-two. The school is now divided into two classes: the lower class learns hangul, simple arithmetic, basic Bible stories and hymns; the upper class reads mixed script, does arithmetic, geography, nature, and deeper Bible study.

The teachers are one lady missionary and one Korean teacher. The Korean teacher finished part of the course of the Pyong Yang Women's Seminary and came to Chong Ju; when one hears her warm voice teaching the girls to read and write Korean, one already has the joy: "The Church is raising up its teachers."

Great difficulties are these: parents still regard a girl's education as only "learning to cook and sew"; because of early marriage, girls must stop at twelve or thirteen; the school's finances are very meagre, and books and basic supplies are lacking. Nevertheless, the fact that twenty-two girls today sit in this Chong Ju classroom learning letters, writing their own names, and singing hymns — this was unthinkable last year.

Our boys' school is less than a year old, but there are now thirty-four boys. It is divided into two primary classes. The course is hangul and mixed-script reading, arithmetic, geography, beginning Chinese characters, first English, basic Bible, hymns and songs, and nature observation. English I myself teach about two hours a week; their pronunciation is picked up quickly, and when I draw pictures on cards with the words, they catch the meanings easily.

One day a boy asked me, "Teacher, the world outside of Korea is very broad. Why then have you taught us only this narrow land?" I answered, "In order that, when you grow up, you may serve both Korea and the world beyond." He turned this answer over in silence for a long time, and the next week I saw him with a geography book open, copying a map.

The boys are mostly from poor homes. Tuition is wholly remitted; lunch each boy brings from home, but the boys from distant places get a meal in our kitchen. The future of this school is the future of the Chong Ju church. Until the day when these boys grow up to stand as workers in the Korean church, we will hold fast to this small seed.

KOREAN LAD WALKED 58 MILES

W. T. Cook (W. T.

A lad of fourteen has walked 58 miles to Chong Ju. He lives in a village to the north, and last winter a Southern Presbyterian itinerator passed through his village and preached the Gospel. After that, when all the village slept, he rose quietly every dawn and read the little Bible which the helper had left behind.

When spring came he obtained his parents' leave and said, "I will go to the place where Teacher Jesus is, and there will study." Having walked three days, the boy reached Chong Ju and knocked at the door of our boys' school. His feet were swollen, and his clothes were covered with sweat and dust, but his eyes were shining.

We enrolled him and placed him in a Christian family for lodging and food. He is now learning arithmetic, hangul, and the Gospel of John. On the last Sabbath he followed with a small voice the hymn "Jesus Loves Me," and when it was finished he said, "Even for one of these songs, fifty-eight miles is not far."

(Chong Ju Station)

CHONG JU STATION

Today the Chong Ju station comprises four families and two single women. Within the station compound are one chapel, a boys' school, a girls' school, a dispensary, and three dwellings. The chapel averages 120 in attendance on Sabbath, with the children's Sunday school held separately. Within a radius of about thirty li around the station there are fourteen meeting places. Most of these are one-room churches with thatched roof, where Sabbath morning service and a mid-week prayer meeting are held. We watch as these small seeds grow year by year.

There is a clear upward line in church attendance. Two years ago the number of baptized members was twenty-three; at present this year it is seventy-six. The number of catechumens is about double that figure. These numbers seem outwardly small, but to the people of these remote mountain villages — who must be reached by chair — they are already a "marvelous thing."

Gifts for a new sanctuary are being gathered spontaneously among the members. A poor widow gave the price of her cut hair, and a boy sold his A-frame pack. We gather their offerings with care, and each time a brick is bought with them we remember their names.

(Chong Ju City Church)

CHONG JU CITY CHURCH

The Chong Ju city church first began to meet in the autumn of 1907. The first service was held in a guest-room of a private home with five in attendance. Two years later, the average Sabbath attendance is now eighty-five, and about twenty children attend Sunday school.

The church building is still a remodeled Korean house, but we plan to dedicate a new chapel within this year. The new chapel stands in the centre of the town so that the people of the city may easily come and go. A great part of the timber was freely given by the members, and the remaining expense has been met by children's gifts from Presbyterian Sunday-schools at home.

Elders and deacons have not yet been formally elected, but two helpers assist in governing the church for the present. Sabbath worship is chiefly Korean preaching and hymns, and on the first Sabbath afternoon of every month baptism and the Lord's Supper are observed.

(In Difficulties)

IN DIFFICULTIES

I would close this Chong Ju number under the little title "In Difficulties." The new station is now near two years old, but our path has never been smooth. Yet these difficulties have been the very tools that have whetted and polished our faith.

First, the difficulty of language. Korean is in itself a delicate and beautiful tongue, but the fineness of its grammar and of its honorifics is seldom conquered by the foreigner. Second, the difficulty of dwelling. Damp, cold, the long unbroken rains of the rainy season, and the long winter when heating is hard to keep up — all these try the health of the missionary and his family. Third, the difficulty of finance. The home church bears many fields at once, and not every request can be met. We often stand waiting, having laid the foundation of a building that is really needed, but postponing the roof to another year.

Fourth, the difficulty of custom. Early marriage, the neglect of women's education, superstition, reliance on shamans, worship of the dead — such traditions do not pass away in one generation. Fifth, the difficulty of the spirit. By the side of a sprouting soul several forces are at work to break the sprout off, and at times strife arises even within the church.

Nevertheless, amid all these difficulties, we see the Lord's leading every day. A patient comes through the church door; a boy walks fifty-eight miles to find a school; a widow cuts her hair for an offering. When we count up these things, we are compelled to confess that our difficulties themselves are "difficulties belonging to the Lord." In the next instalment we will share some of the lessons we are still learning in Chong Ju.
